The Solid Waste District continues to accept landscape waste at their Crooked Lake site on CR 175 N adjacent to the Steuben County 4H Fairgrounds. Hours of operation have been limited more than usual because of COVID19. The Solid Waste District is now open with summer hours.

Your Association Board recently negotiated a new contract with REPUBLIC SERVICES as the old 3 year agreement will expire on June 30, 2021. The old rate was $50.91 for 3 months. That included weekly garbage pick up and recycling pick up every other week. We also sought bids from Washler (They did not submit a bid in spite of repeated phone calls), and Noble County Disposal. The Noble County company is not acceptable because they would require our Association to do the billing for them, and we do not have the volunteer resources to do that. 

Effective July 1, the Republic rate structure has changed. You will be able to get weekly garbage service only for $32.00 for 3 months. If you want to continue having your recycling picked up every two weeks, that price will be an additional $36.00 for 3 months. We were told the charge for NONmembers of the Crooked Lake Association is roughly $85 per quarter. Remember you have to be a 2021 Member of the Crooked Lake Association to get these special lower rates. One option, for example, is to have your garbage only picked up, and take your recycling to the service center near the 4H Park. Your cost would drop to $32 for three months. 

Unfortunately, the invoices Republic has been sending out recently have incorrect rates on them for the period beginning July 1. Republic Services is now aware of the billing problem. Lots of Confusion! Republic is advising you to pay your latest invoice total even though it is not correct. Once you receive your next invoice from Republic around September, you will need to call their Customer Service office at 260-747-4117 or 800-876-9001 to apply for a refund if you overpaid. At that same time, you will need to tell customer service if you do not want recycling pickup anymore, so they can come and pick up your recycle container. We ask for your patience as these changes all work themselves out.

Steuben County Regional Waste District

Steuben Lakes Regional Waste (sewer) meetings -These meetings are held on the first Thursday after the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at 8119 W. 150 N. Angola (near Flint).

 

Steuben County Lakes Council

The council meetings are held the first Saturday of each month (excluding January) at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Angola, at 8:30 a.m.

The mission of the Steuben Lakes Environmental Consortium, LLC (SLEC, LLC) is to advocate for responsible environmental management of the land, lakes, waterways and other natural resources of Steuben County. Go to the website to read more about the CAFO

 

Steuben County Government

Steuben County has several avenues that lake issues are presented. Steuben County Plan Commission and BZA are examples of platforms for those issues issues around the lakes. We will try to keep you abreast of any issues that pertain to our Lake. Also check out the Steuben County Government for current information.

 

Indiana Department of Natural Resources

The Department of Natural Resources is a vast resource of information. You can find boating safety course information and practice tests. Specific information on lakes and water in general can be found on their website's Lakes/water section

Fishing

To fish in public lakes, streams, rivers or tributaries in the state of Indiana or its boundary waters, you must have a valid fishing license. License holders must carry their license while fishing and present it to a conservation officer (or any authorized law enforcement official) upon request. There are fines and penalties for fishing without a license. The private boat launch is at Casey’s Cove Marina. The public launch is inside Steuben County Park off County Road 200 West on east side of first basin.
