"Hello
I found your e-mail on the Crooked Lake website. This story was among the personal items that I "inherited" from my grandfathers' (Harrison Shearer) older sister Jennie. Jennie died in 1968 at the age of 92. She and her husband, Burton C Shenefield had no children. Jennie, it seems, was an aspiring writer and this was one of the stories I have of hers.
The original is in long hand, and I have transcribed it here. Some background. Jennie and Burton were in their mid forties at the time of this trip. Burton was an educator, and at the time of his death in 1933, was the principal at Studebaker Elementary School in South Bend. It seems they were vacationing with Ann, RHL (not sure of name) and their son John Longfield. I believe that they drove their car for the 6 1/2 hour drive from South Bend to Crooked Lake.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Gerald Shearer" [Open the story in a PDF format]
